The Grade 9-10 grade English as a Second Language (ESL) program will use the Cambridge Interchange 5thedition book. In ESL class, students develop their listening/pronunciation, reading/writing, speaking/grammar skills. Through the process of reading appropriate graphical novels and short stories, students will increase their English vocabulary. Not only will students learn new words, but will be able to use them in daily conversations. There will also be a strong focus on comprehension. Students will begin to learn to analyze texts and be able to articulate their thoughts and ideas in conversations, as well as convey them in writing using proper grammar. Writing an informative three paragraph essay will be part of a student’s final evaluation. Students’ evaluations will also consist of giving informative oral presentations in class. After completion of this course, students will be able toanswer comprehension questionsin conversations with others and display their learned English skills in real-life settings.
