Assessment: Ongoing assessment of skills, tactical awareness and performance


Physical Education is an essential and basic part of the total education program.The goal of a physically educated student is to maintain appropriate levels of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition necessary for a healthy and productive life.

In grade 9,through a variety of instructional strategies, students practice skills that demonstrate: competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities; understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activitiesas critical to the development and maintenance of good health. Throughout the year, students will develop and implement a one-month personal physical fitness plan.

Physical Educationin grade 10 continues to build upon the skills, tactics and performance criteria of grade 9. Students willlearn to identify, explain, and apply the skill-related components of balance, reaction time, agility, coordination, explosive power, and speed that enhance performance levels in aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities. Students will demonstrate independent learning of movement skillsas well as participate in enjoyable and challenging physical activities that develop and maintain the five components of physical fitness. Throughout the year, students will develop and implement a one-month personal physical fitness plan.


Health Education

Standards: US National Standards for Health Education

Assessment: Assessment of coursework and assignments.

Health education should contribute directly to a student’s ability to successfully practice behaviors that protect and promote health and avoid or reduce health risks.

In grade9,through a variety of instructional strategies, students practice the development of functional health information (essential concepts); determine personal values that support health behaviors; develop group norms that value a healthy lifestyle; develop the essential skills necessary to adopt, practice, and maintain health-enhancing behaviors.This course provides students with the knowledge and skills of health and wellness core concepts, analyzing influences, accessing information, interpersonal communication, decision-making and goal-setting skills, health-enhancing behaviors, and health and wellness advocacy skills.

The grade 10 health education course continues to support a healthy body, healthy mind and improved wellness philosophy, that is built in grade 9. Students will then learn to propose ways to reduce or prevent injuries and health problemsand consider ways in whichpeers influence healthy and unhealthy behaviors.Students will develop a plan to attain a personal health goal that addresses strengths, needs, and risks.
