THISDL was founded by Tsinghua University High School and the Haidian District Education Bureau, Beijing, in 2020, under a special project to provide education services to a new hi-tech research zone in Beijing. Due to changes in government policy in 2024, Tsinghua University High School had to relinquish direct administration of THISDL.
According to government regulations, public schools may no longer directly administer private non-profit schools, requiring a change to the Chinese name of a school. In March 2025, THISDL was asked to adjust its Chinese character name with “hua” becoming “hsiang”. In accordance with name change regulations, students enrolled at THISDL before March 2025, will still be issued graduation certificates and transcripts bearing the name Tsinghua International School Daoxiang Lake. Students enrolled at THISDL in grade 9 from August 2025, will be issued graduation certificates and transcripts bearing the name Tsinghsiang International School Daoxiang Lake. The abbreviated school name of THISDL, including the school’s web address will remain unchanged.
