When Sun Yingqi pushed the door open and sat down, we stared at her black long-sleeve polo shirt for quite a while. The shirt was a souvenir given to volunteers a few years ago at the school’s university counseling conference. Kids these days almost always prefer trendy casual wear. Yet here she was, a 12th grader with a stack of top university offers, choosing to wear this old, long-forgotten volunteer shirt to a formal interview. It really stood out.

At THISDL, Zhang Enge's story is hard to categorize simply. But when his admission to Columbia University arrived, all these pieces fell into a clearer focus.
