When Sun Yingqi pushed the door open and sat down, we stared at her black long-sleeve polo shirt for quite a while. The shirt was a souvenir given to volunteers a few years ago at the school’s university counseling conference. Kids these days almost always prefer trendy casual wear. Yet here she was, a 12th grader with a stack of top university offers, choosing to wear this old, long-forgotten volunteer shirt to a formal interview. It really stood out.

At THISDL, Zhang Enge's story is hard to categorize simply. Some see him as an entrepreneur, others focus on his public welfare initiatives, and still others pay more attention to his well-defined college application journey. But when his admission to Columbia University arrived, all these pieces fell into a clearer focus.

Shen Yuhang, the daughter of Principal Xin, is probably the least stereotypical model student in Beijing’s education circle.
